Why?
Because.
OK, Seriously, Why?
Well, I've always been a nerd --
Well, that's a shock.
Har har.
Anyway -- I set up my first home server several years ago, I've learned a lot since then, and I thought I'd share that with the Interblags / Blagotubes / Webosphere.
Basically, I want to be able to show you what I've done for myself, and hopefully teach you how to do it also. Eventually that'll mean VM images, configuration sets, script packages ...
OK, fine -- but Archlinux? Seriously?
Hey, Archlinux is awesome!
But to elaborate: I've found Archlinux to be really, really cool.
It has several features that I've come to love:
- Minimal initial installation -- you don't have to remove any
cruftunnecessary software that's installed by default. - Rapid release cycle -- Arch's list of available packages (programs) is updated often -- basically, whenever a developer commits a new sub-sub-version, that update is immediately visible to Arch's package manager. You could check for updates every day and always get at least one update -- in fact, that's what I do.
- Excellent documentation -- the Arch-wiki is absolutely wonderful in every possible way. (OK, that's a bit of a stretch.) But it really is very pretty and packed full of useful information. I rarely have to refer to any source other than the wiki -- and then only when I have a very niche problem with some very niche piece of software.
What can you possibly hope to accomplish?
To give you a couple of walkthroughs into common -- for me -- configurations, complete with screenshots, readouts, and VM images.
So here goes nothin'.
